In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Great Western Society, the Didcot Railway Centre held a special event over the course of two weekends September 10th & 11th and 17th & 18th . This was to feature visiting locomotives, demonstration goods trains, vintage trains, operational signalling on the branchline and a naming ceremony.
Locomotives appearing during the events were:
- Ex-GWR 6000 Class 4-6-0 no.6023 'King Edward II' (Sadly not in steam on the day I went)
- Ex- BR Gas Turbine no.18000 (Recently arrived from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, on display outside the shed.)
- FGW Class 43 HST Power Cars nos.43027 'Penydarren' & 43024 (Named on the Saturday at Didcot 'Great Western Society 1961 - 2011 Didcot Railway Centre'
- Ex-GWR 0-4-0ST no.1340 'Trojan'
- Ex-GWR 4300 Class 2-6-0 no.5322
- Ex-GWR 2251 Class 0-6-0 no.3205 (A locomotive which the GWS helped to save, visiting from the South Devon Railway)
- Ex- GWR 1400 Class 0-4-2T no.1450 (17th & 18th only)
- GWR broad gauge Firefly Class 2-2-2 'Firefly'
- Steam Railmotor no.93 (17th & 18th only)
- Ex-GWR Diesel Railcar no.22 (17th & 18th only)
And a number of other locomotives on display during the event. I went on the first Sunday and had to spend most of my time in the shed due to the weather being rather indecisive, was hoping to see the TPO but unfortunately this was cancelled. Notice someone seems to have stuck at she plate sticker on 6023, 32A Norwich, not exactly Western Region.
