Move N' Mingle is an adapted dance program, for people with intellectual disabilities that operates at the Prosserman Jewish Community Centre in Toronto Canada. We serve a diverse group of individuals and have been dancing together for over 10 years, with the help of some very dedicated volunteers. Our dance repertoire consists of modified folk dances as well as dances that have been specifically choreographed for our group, according to the musical preferences of the participants. Waka Waka was the official song of the 2010 FIFA world cup soccer championship, held in South Africa. This dance, has been choreographed for the Move n Mingle Program. The parts of the dance follow the musical arrangement and are not repeated exactly the same number of times throughout the song. To master this dance, the dance leader needs to become familiar with the song, and then the movements flow very well.

Here is a summary of the dance movements:
Opening sequence arms UP to R, Up to L, Down To R, Down to L x4
Traveling around the circle with a push & push hand movement x8 sequences
Rolling & Chopping: Roll arms low and then higher x4
Chopping movement with hands low and then higher x 4
Waka Waka chorus x2: hands in prayer position in front of chest, move R side to L side 2 times, With hands separated, palms facing forward, hands move up-down-up-down

Mayim, is a well known folk dance from Israel celebrating finding water in the desert. The original dance included a grapevine step, aka “mayim” step, as well as a very bouncy, exuberant style. We have slowed down the dance, and have simplified the footwork, making the dance more suitable for our group members. There are many recordings of the song Mayim available.
Sequence:
16 Running or walking steps to the left, end facing centre of circle
Run to center 4 steps
Run back out 4 steps
Repeat run to centre and out
Bounce in place x4
Cross R foot in front of Left-- while clapping hands
Open R foot to R side-- while opening hands
Repeat cross and open 3 more times.

Hoe Ana is a folk dance from the Cook Islands in Polynesia. The movements in this dance represent the migration of the islanders in search of new islands. The original dance would have been done kneeling as in a canoe. For some members of our group, this would be a difficult position, so we have elected to remain standing throughout the dance. Alternatively, it is easy to do this dance sitting in a chair for any individuals with mobility issues. This version of Hoe Ana is based upon notation by Frances Bourque Moreau.

The story I verbalize when leading dances is as follows:
Follow the birds X2
Together in the boat--swaying side to side with arms crossed
Repeat

On the water, On the water using hands to skim water surface
Looking for the land--rocking movement with hands shielding eyes
Under the Sun--hand up
Under the Moon--other hand up
Under the stars-- hands make bursting movements to the front in 4 positions
Paddle your canoe, slowly, x4
Now I see the land, hands reach forward and bring the land to yourself X2

Fast Paddling sequence:

Get splashed--Sprinkling movements with hands x4
Dive in
And you've landed with a clap

Branle des Lavandieres, is an adapted renaissance dance from France depicting washerwomen, who did laundry on the riverbanks hundreds of years ago. The pantomime part of the dance is particularly enjoyed by everyone. The clapping section of the dance, is meant to represent the use of laundry bats/paddles that were used to hit the clothes in order to clean them. Curious? Visit
